Ski Bums

That's right, Faith and I went skiing. For Christmas we gave each other a weekend getaway (sans Sunday) of skiing at Nakiska. It included a night and a day away from the kids and it was all inclusive and guilt-free... or so that's what we had to keep reminding each other! We left Friday evening before supper and had a blast!

No, I'm not trying to make anyone jealous. Okay, maybe just a little. I think this is our first overnight getaway date alone since our honeymoon. Either we're chincy or easy to please. Maybe both. Apparently we stayed at 'the good one', as Tom put it. He and Lise were there as well this weekend. Not that we really saw much of each other. Just during supper at the Delta Lodge in the Kananaskis. The food at the Fireweed was great, including the creamy white chocolate and fresh raspberry cheesecake we took to our room which I was drooling over. (We forgot I was allergic to fresh raspberries when we ordered - that was kinda funny. No wonder I was craving them.) I gasped when I saw the bill later, but remembered that we don't do this much and we 'deserve' it. There, take that, Guilt! Ha ha!

We went back to our room to watch Trading Spaces (we don't get cable - don't laugh) but the satellite or cable line or whatever was down for the night. So we payed theatre prices to rent a theatre movie on the small screen in our room - The Guardian. It was a gooder. I promised Faith, next time it's The Devil Wears Prada or some other girly movie. C'mon, it was a drama! There was romance! It was also 2 1/2 hours long including bathroom breaks. We're both still trying to shake this flu and haven't been 100% successful. After the movie we tried to sleep but neither of us really got much.

We woke up to a hideous sounding alarm telling us it was time to hit the slopes. We hit snooze a couple of times and then threw it against a wall so we could sleep in. We finally got to the hill at 10 AM, rented some skis, and were on our way. There was a skiff of fresh snow on the slopes. It felt good to be alive! It was also freezing cold. However many layers we had on, they were no match for Jack. Mr. Frost nipped at our noses and toeses and everything in between. IT WAS STILL FUN. We warmed up inside a few times, and by the end of the day I rented a snowboard just to make a fool of myself and get back on the horse. Did I mention I did a 30 km/h cartwheel last year on the last run of the day with the youth group? That's a good story. Again, not for the faint of heart.

By the way, the title of this update is deceiving - we spent very little time on our bums. Faith had a cool faceplant into the powder from which she received a Charlie horse and just prior to that hit an ice column near a snow machine, but that was about it. I fell over backwards once on the snowboard after which I received advice not to do that without a helmet, and skittered to a few other stops. Not so bad, considering... I think we did great!

We got back to Faith's parents' place before too late and greeted our kids who were also wiped from a weekend at Grandpa's & Grandma's, sipped some hot chocolate, ate supper, and went away to bed. It is 8:30 PM and I believe the other three are asleep. I may just head there myself! But first I'll tell you last year's wipeout...
