Today we took a trip up to Olds to watch their small-town parade. It was an hour long and they provided plenty of candy for the kids to collect. "They" said they would not be throwing candy, but handing it out so as not to cause any injuries. However, in actuality, throwing was the norm, and a good amount landed in the puddle before us next to the gutter. It was only 17 degrees (Celsius) with a cold wind at the time, and since the forecast was for 30 degrees, half of the floats were hucking freezies. A few hours later, we were wishing that they weren't melted. The kids were cute dashing to and from the curb and into their blanketed lawn chairs.
You know you're in rural Alberta when large farm machinery can make its way through the streets without knocking down light standards, power poles, or stop lights! Hey these things are highlights for the kids, you know. There were a great number of oohs and aahs from the crowd. The three mounties marched well together to the bagpipers behind them, and the town celebrity, Jason Jaffray of the Vancouver Canucks, was a hometown hit.
Next, we travelled up Hwy 2A to Innisfail for $2 burgers at Innisfail Packers, and Micah complained that he was hot, that he was frozen, that he was frying, that he was cold - usually we attribute these complaints to hormone imbalances, don't we? He just had a day of arguing and complaining. Aslynn too with interspersed occurrences of attitude... so much so that we changed our plans for the afternoon. We wanted to go to Discovery Canyon in Red Deer to cool down in the heat, but instead we had to settle for air conditioning and ice cream at McDonald's with friend and family. Besides the outbursts and glares, the day went well. Faith got some new sandals at the mall, and we got in a good visit with J-Lynn.
