I cried into my popcorn tonight. Years ago when my Grandpa Guynup was little his parents gave them popcorn every Sunday night. My mom and her siblings grew up eating popcorn every Sunday night, and they passed it on to us. It was a comfort to me, we would sit around the TV every Sunday night watching Disney and eating popcorn. I loved the idea that many of my cousins were also sitting around and eating the same thing for supper every Sunday night that we were. I received large bread bowls and a popcorn popper from my Auntie Joan & Uncle Elmo for a wedding present. Now my children also know that Sunday night is Disney and popcorn on the couch. It has been a family binding tradition for a few generations now. 3 1/2years ago my grandpa passed away and joined Jesus in heaven waiting for us. This week on Thursday night my grandma suffered a very severe stroke. We dropped all plans of going back to Caronport this weekend and rushed to Red Deer to sit by her side in the hospital room. A comfort for us and her as well. This afternoon as we sat by her bedside I commented to dad that I wished there was some way that we could bring popcorn into her hospital room. It just seemed wrong that so many of the Guynups would be together on a Sunday night and not have popcorn there. As I said my good-byes to Grandma later I knew it would probably be the last time that we would have with her. Just before leaving my sister's house my dad phoned from the hospital laughing, one of my cousins had showed up in Grandma's hospital room with some microwavable popcorn. I laughed as well, but was sad to know that we were missing out on being there for this family tradition. We drove back to Calgary and began packing our van again to head back to Caronport, and I made our traditional bowl of popcorn for supper, and cried. It's sad to think that Grandma will not be around for hugs, kisses, and love and advice. She will be missed greatly here. God always seems to bring exactly the comfort you need in each situation. As I was driving home tonight I heard this song on the radio and I wanted to share it with you.
