Below is a video from April 10th at the lake next to Beach Corner Church (where I work).
You only see me in my Bermuda shorts diving into Hubbles Lake twice. The third time I dove into the frigid waters was after all of the video crew and newspapers left. Here's a link to the newspaper article the Edmonton Journal wrote on us. They ran it both Sunday and Monday: Sunday we were front page, and Monday we were page 5 and still in full colour. Not to brag or anything. The ice was 25 inches thick, so I had to use my Grandpa Janzen's antiquated one man ice saw (43 inches) to break through, and I broke off both handles before we were done. We used a backhoe to drag the thick ice on to the shore. The water temperature was 33 degrees Fahrenheit. For those of you of my generation, that's 0.5 degrees Celsius. It's a good thing God sent the sun to warm us up and dry us off. 20 youth joined in to raise support and awareness for our upcoming trip to Peru. And this is one of the reasons we've been a little too busy to blog. I'll let you know a bit more about that later.
Add a few more ingredients: I led worship at a worship night the same evening as the polar bear dip, had been teaching Sunday School up until this Sunday along with my regular pastoral duties, had Brian & Janice over for a week, and I am currently writing this from Caronport, SK where many of our friends are graduating in less than an hour. Speaking of which, I need to go don a suit and get all gussied up...
