Driving the back roads is always fun for the sights, but we realized that it's probably not the safest way to travel. We probably went more than 15 miles before we saw a yard that wasn't abandoned. There was only one vehicle that had travelled the road we were on to break through the drifts, and he had a much higher clearance than we did. Of course, when we arrived in Kelstern for church the farmers said, "You came up which road?" When I told them, I got a funny look, and then a smile, and then they said, "It's a good thing you didn't come down the (such and such) highway, because it's probably worse."
By the way, if you look really closely, you will see the owl perched in the old barn's window. I didn't notice it until I blew the picture up and thought that it might be an old pulley or elevator system. The lone pine tree on the prairie got our attention too. And the abandoned Baptist church stands where a town used to be. Kelstern is a much newer church, but the school is gone and all is left is the shell of a few buildings besides the new church. Saving time by taking the back roads meant that we had time to take some pictures.
We also went to a birthday party on Saturday and had a chance to go sledding. That was a lot of fun. Good friends and warm company are always welcome when it's cold outside.
After shovelling out again this morning and knowing I will have to once more tonight one could get depressed. But really, with this weather, I prefer a good dump of snow to a blistering cold, icy rainfall, or muddy mayhem. It's so pretty and clean and (besides the blowing snow that creates zero visibility) almost safe. It's winter.

You mean they actually have a hill in Saskatchewan big enough to go sledding on? Love the pictures you took on the back roads - they're beautiful.
