Micah's "Love" for Soccer

Today is the first day of soccer for the kids at Micah's school. Except Micah.

Does anybody else think that's odd? We asked Micah whether he wanted to play soccer and he responded with a definite "No". We've been having difficulty figuring out why. According to his friend, Carter, Micah is the best soccer player in the school. Perhaps that's why the Grade 1 kids beat the Grade 4's occasionally. Carter really wants Micah to play this year, and to play on his team in particular. We're going to watch soccer tonight to let Micah see his buddies play.

So - we've been trying to come up with an answer to this conundrum of a boy. Micah explained to me that he plays soccer all of the time at school, and can't figure out why anyone else would want to play any more than that. He said something else that got my attention as well. He told me that soccer is just a bit too easy. He'd rather play hockey because it's hard. Does that make any sense coming from a 6-year-old boy? Is he just lazy? It doesn't sound like it. And he takes every opportunity he gets to spend time with his friends. Maybe he genuinely doesn't like soccer! Yet he plays with me (that or hockey or football or Frisbee or baseball) whenever he gets a chance. Weird.

All I know is that he's got a bunch of fans and he's about to disappoint them all. Good for him not giving in to peer-pressure, anyway...

Mark, he is truly your son...he just doesn't want to have all his free time organized for him; he wants to play, think and rest without rushing around to someone else's schedule, just like you. Some of us don't know when to say NO!, even to the good things in life that can make us too busy.
Reminds me of Eric when he wanted to try out for the Wolfpack just to qualify, but didn't want to play for them because he wanted to play golf and all the other 'fun in the sun' things that don't take place in icy arenas. Smart kid...
Love ya, Mom
