Faith and I were trying to figure out what we were going to do for Judah's birthday cake. This is standard procedure in our house. It all starts with a few ideas and a sketch. First we look for a few pictures online, select a few good ideas, and then do what we were going to do all along - our own thing. We set up camp at the table with a few of the items that we needed as models for our masterpiece. Then I went to work creating a jigsaw puzzle of the cake on paper to shape and mould it into the landscape or creature or object we chose. I made a crude two-dimensional drawing, then a second 3D rendering of the project to actually give it some feeling, and Faith added a splash of colour with Aslynn's crayons.
Then Judah kept asking me to draw things over and over again, the same items I had drawn on the cake. It was semi-sweet and semi-annoying. He seems pretty impressed by my abilities. He's almost four now. I'm sure we can keep this going for another couple of years. Aslynn on the other hand...
"Daddy, you're an even better drawer than Judah --- actually no. But you're a really good colorer."
We laughed later. I mean, I really wasn't trying to do a great job, and Judah was asking me to draw him one "O" after another - for the wheels, that is. And I barely colored anything, but was inspired to do more coloring. Forget the drawing. Apparently we used the wrong color in one place so I guess we weren't as good as Aslynn had appraised us at before. Oh well. I guess we have our work cut out for us if we try to pretend that we're all that and a bag of chips for too much longer. Though the confidence of my five-year-old is slightly shaken (I blame school), my pride is still in tact. I am, after all, a really good colorer...
