Micah's First Trip to the Hospital

Micah takes after his dad in a number of ways. You'll discover why soon.

We were at a friend's home on Sunday evening visiting and eating and having a great time. The kids were playing in the yard when we heard this shrieking and wailing and freaking, "OW ... OW ... OW...!" between every breath. There was another adult out there who had already picked up Micah and was trying to calm him down. On my way out of the house I know that there is something a little more wrong than just a scrape, scratch, or sliver. I was told that he was just over-reacting, but I knew better. Sure, Micah can freak out with the best of them, but he doesn't do - this. Looking into his eyes and trying to get him to focus on my voice was difficult. He couldn't see me! He couldn't keep his eyes from crossing and uncrossing, and he's shouting (imagine a panicked breath between each punctuation),

"I CAN'T SEE! I CAN'T SEE! DADDY, AM I DREAMING? I DON'T THINK SO! WHERE AM I? OH MY BACK!HELP ME! HELP ME! OW! OW!"

When we got him back to the house he had regained his sight, but things were still a bit fuzzy and blurry. He remembered being on the swing and that he was competing to swing the highest and then remembered being on the ground with a sore back and head. We didn't find any lumps, but we knew the symptoms. Daddy has had several concussions, and it was the first reason he ever went to the hospital. That's another three stories, plus a few minor ones.

He still has one scratch on the top of his back from it. I think what bothered me most was that his legs were a little tingly for a while and his eyesight didn't immediately improve. He was still a bit fuzzy when we got home. I mean, his eyesight is not perfect, but he wasn't himself. So I called the health nurse who fortunately did not call an ambulance to pick him up, though at least my medical plan would have covered it and we would have gotten in to see a doctor a lot sooner. We arrived at the Westview Medical Clinic at 9:15 ish after picking up McFlurrys where they didn't really clue into the keywords "head-injury" and "child". We were there for a long time and waited for a doctor to tell me what I knew already - next time pick a different hospital, the Stollery, where the nurses would take us seriously and they'd give him a head CT in a heartbeat. And just observe him. We got home at 2:00am after eating double cheeseburgers.

Micah's lesson: Daddy knows how to wait at hospitals? No, wait, don't hit your head like Dad does.

He's still feeling some pain in his chest from the fall, but he's mostly okay, the opposite of mostly dead.

Wow! That's a scary incident. I had to laugh though when you said you picked up McFlurries before going to the ER. Still chuckling...

I'm glad he's mostly ok. We've had several concussions in our crowd over the years. Next time, do go to the Stollery. They are fantastic. But hopefully there is no next time, right?
