Street Performers Festival

We met Clay and Tam for lunch on Friday and then headed downtown to the Street Performers Festival at Churchill Square. We had a fun time right from the start. There was a wacky clown wandering around on burning stilts, a heavy metal magician, and some lady making guys do a banana dance. And an 'animatronic' Elvis impersonator.

One of the best performances was by a German juggler who was the most quick-witted of the bunch. You try juggling a baton, plunger, and machete with gum attached to the end for you to eat whilst riding a 6 foot unicycle AND crack jokes while you are at it. We were trying to go home, but we couldn't tear our eyes and ears away from the spectacle. He also threw a bowling ball in the air and caught it with a plunger balanced on his chin.

The BeArthurs were pretty good too. A ukulele rock band (2 uke's and a kid-sized drum kit) that covered songs like "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion as a rock/drama/punk'd version and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". They rocked out the "Wipeout" and AC/DC's "Thunderstruck". No, really, imagine it - ukuleles... They did awesome!

There were other funny jugglers too - a pair called The Silly Guys*. They were okie-dokie, and very much child-friendly (which was more than I can say for the heavy metal magician, who actually really was a crude, below-average magician). The great Alakazam juggled on the edge of danger as well.

At the end of the day, we narrowly avoided a parking ticket and put sopping wet kids into the vehicle who could no longer resist the large wading fountain in front of Edmonton's City Hall. Then we took the scenic route home over the river and back again across Whyte Ave and back north on Groat Road (our nemesis) which was quite fun and beautiful along the North Saskatchewan River valley. All in all, that was a do-again family outing!

*We were in the Grande Prairie Zellers and the kids recognized The Silly Guys. They were apparently buying 50 golf balls to lose while playing at the Riverbend Golf Club out near Beaverlodge.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Living near Edm for nine yrs we never made it out to the festivals, which was one of my regrets. Glad you found some fun!
