August 28, 1963 these words were spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. This is only half of his speech - for the full speech can be found on YouTube with subtitles if you wish.
How far have we really come? I remember the words of our Social Studies books calling out America as a melting pot of culture whereas they touted Canada as a great mosaic, tolerant and free. How different are we really? I believe that we have these moments where we look at one people group that we have embraced and while ignoring others that we would rather not mention except in jokes and curses under our breath. I am not promoting tolerance. I think it is a sad excuse for ignorance. What I will promote is love. And that means actually getting to know someone of a different culture and caring for them despite your differences, quirks, idiosyncracies, flaws, and preferences. I don't think returning from Peru has changed the idea of love for others in the way that I think, but perhaps it has changed where I place it in the way I act and the priority I may give it in reality. Only time will tell.
