We tried to get up the Calgary Tower today. It was the 40th anniversary of the tower and they were offering free admittance to the top of the tower. As we headed downtown we ran into friends who said that they had stood in line for 3 hours before they got to go up. Surely it can't be that bad we thought. No .... it was worse. We, (with 3 little ones, just before supper), only lasted one hour in line. We weren't actually even in the tower yet and the line stretched out two more hours in front of us. With starving children we headed out to McDonald's for supper and than home, with the promise of other fun things to do another day. None of us had the energy to corral the monkeys for another two hours in line. It was an opportunity lost, but none to sadly. I think I may have lost it if we had staid longer.
I had problems loading this onto blogger last night and now I'm glad. I have a funny rest of the story about the tower for you. We left the line last night around 5:00pm. I guess around 6:00 some alarm somewhere went off and the observation deck of the tower had to be evacuated. We would have still been in line below but in the middle of the mess of the firemen arriving and the top being evacuated. When alarms go off in a building like that the elevators turn off and people are not alowed to use them. So all those poor people at the top had to go down the stairs, over 800 of them. I guess one woman in her 70's collapesed going downstairs and firefighters also had to go up and rescue her and carry her the rest of the way down. I can say with confidince now that I'm glad we left yesterday before the craziness got worse.
