Happy Canada Day. We didn't feel brave enough to fight the crowds down at Prince's Island Park today. So when we heard about a Canada Day celebration going on in our nearby park we decided to head over. What we didn't know is that it was hosted by the temple nearby. Although not the only Caucasians there we were definitely outnumbered. We stood in line to get our burgers, (the wrong line we found out later, we walked in and just got in line to discover later that it was for women only. They did serve dad though and the other Caucasian men in line, I'm sure they just chalked it up to our stupidity for not realizing that we were in the women only line), and then we found a empty piece of grass to eat. As we sat down we joked about the fact that they served hot and spicy banana peppers to go onto their burgers. And than we took our first bite. At that point we realized that the burgers themselves had been cooked with some kind of curry sauce on them. They were hot. Our brave children only had one bite before they rebelled against eating all that spice. We had to bring them home later and feed them boring peanut butter sandwiches.
I enjoyed it though. It's part of what Canada actually is. Had we went downtown we would have been served normal burgers, but not experienced the multi-culturalism of our country and this city. Considering we have a black son it's good to be around non white people some of the time. As I attempted to nap this afternoon I was thinking about the ceremony in the park that we caught the end of. They were handing our citizenship papers today to people who have just joined our country. I thought to myself, 'What a great day to actually become a Canadian'. It was at this point that I realized that this is actually Micah's first Canada day as a Canadian citizen. Last year at this time his papers had not come yet. My son's first Canada day .... I guess maybe I should celebrate it with him by taking him out to the fireworks tonight. I think I'll leave the other two monkeys at home in bed.
