Micah's Hockey

Micah has been playing hockey in a rec league set up by West Edmonton Christian Assembly. He's been really enjoying it. Jon and Sheri Bueckert let us know about it because their son Jordan played with them last year. He and Micah are the same age. Apparently last year Jordan was traded because he was on the winning team so often, and this move evened the teams out sufficiently. Jon was telling me that Jordan likes hockey, but wasn't so enthusiastic about it that they should put him into minor hockey. This is a great place for kids to learn and have fun. Many of the kids haven't been playing long.

Of course Micah has been in a similar situation in Caronport, but he's been playing with a lot of kids who are up to 5 years older than him. So when he got player of the game the first time out with his displays of flying both ways up and down the ice and scoring two goals in his first two shifts, we thought it might be an issue. The game ended up being 4-4 though, so my concerns were unfounded. The next game he scored three goals and his team won 5-3. I blame our good goaltending on the other team's lackluster performance. Micah got more ice time since there were five less players on our bench.

Jordan is #47 on the white team, and Micah is #12 on the black (in the white helmet). How did he get Jerome Iginla's number you might ask? It was rather random, but hey, we're in Edmonton, and the only place this might be a number that is fought over would be in St. Albert where he lived and played as a kid. These kids are playing out at the Enoch Reservation close to Devon, only about a 10-15 minute drive from our house. But we have to get up at 6:30 AM to get there in time. Bummer.

Micah and I have had the privilege of watching the Spruce Grove Saints Jr. "A" Hockey Club play twice: once with Grandpa & Grandma Siebert when they were here over Thanksgiving, and once earlier. This hockey has almost as much bumping and grinding but lacks the fist-fights, speed, and finesse. We figured that every time that Jordan and Micah were on the ice, they collided. Jon said that Jordan was not really trying for the puck unless he was challenged by someone like Micah. That happened quite a bit, actually. I wonder how things will be when we actually get his skates sharpened (poor guy)? Neither boy actually knows the other one yet. So funny!
