Micah's Hockey Tournament

It's really strange to hear people that we don't know shouting, "Go Micah!" They had plenty of reason to though.

The drive down to Lacombe wasn't bad. It's nice to have good weather and roads every once in a while when we're traveling. Micah's team was invited by the Christian school in Lacombe to play in a friendship tournament. They also invited a team from Calgary. Our team had been playing on home ice all season long against itself, but had not played against other teams yet. The WECA Hockey League wasn't exactly the most competitive. But is was a lot of fun.

One of the boys commented to his mom, "I'm so glad Micah is going to be on my team for once!" Micah had been filling his net with pucks all season long, and now they were finally wearing the same jersey. We were looking forward to Micah playing with some of the other kids from the white team, like Jordan Bueckert. Yes, Micah was on the black team. They had black jerseys. Just go with it. Unfortunately for Micah, he had to give up his #12 Jerome Iginla jersey for a #22 Anson Carter (or was it Mike Bossy or Mike Gartner? Luke Richardson? Tiger Williams? Charlie Huddy? NOPE). Whatever. He looked pretty good out there anyway.

The first game was a bit of a walk-away. The other team looked like it had played more. I believe there were 100 shots on goal against us; 9-2 was the final score. Micah had a few full-tilt breakaways, but couldn't bury the puck. The third period was so much better.

In between games, we sat near the pool to eat our lunch and let Judah and Aslynn run around on an indoor playground. Then Matt and Teresa arrived with Brooklyn, Marek and Norah, and we went to visit for a little while at A&W. The kids played and had a good time while we tried to visit. Judah kept taking the little displays from the tables and used them as tents and garages for his cars.

After this, Micah had another game. This time Grandma and Grandpa Nation made it, as did Uncle Brian who happened to be working in town. We all cheered loudly. So did the rest of our fans. You could hear Micah's name the most.

Mark was trying to get Micah to play his position instead of hanging back at the blue-line so that we wouldn't get scored on again. And again, he stopped a lot of goals. A lot.  But he also went end to end a couple of times, and from his experiences last game, he chose to deke. He went to his backhand on the first goal, and on his second he slid the puck five-hole instead of shooting it into the tender's pads. The final score was 7-5 for the other team, but everyone was in far better spirits. Everyone was cheering him on for the hat-trick, but he just couldn't put another one in. He was so tired from playing both ends and stopping breakaways that he could hardly stand up. His back is still sore today. But he did well and we're proud of him.
